Beet 1 hemsida

The beta vulgaris, of the beetroot family, is said to have been cultivated as long as 3000 years ago.

It is very likely that the beetroot stems from the eastern Mediterranean area and the Middle East. In those days, it is likely that the only part of it that was eaten was the leaves, and it was not until the romans started to grow beetroots that they started using the actual root in cooking. It was, for example, boiled with honey and wine. According to myth, the god Apollo was offered beetroots in his temple in Delphi, these were then considered to be worth their weight in silver!
